Mixed Feelings | sausy

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: sausy is a Dutch-Surinamese dj, poet and cultural worker based in Amsterdam, with a keen ear for rich groovy basslines and percussive rhythms. In their blends, they center emotion, loudness, experimentation & joy - for the joy of a good dancefloor has often felt like home to them. Through their deejaying, sausy honours the rhythms and echoes of their heritage and the BIPOC & queer communities they make part of.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

This mix reflects the confusing state of being surrounded and shaped by an empire of violence and finding & building love, care, solidarity and joy in the midst of it all. It starts with a few tracks that encompass rather eerie spoken word that resonated with me and then transitions into sounds of rage and ‘madness', finally easing into more soothing, even joyful sounds. To speak with Nina Simone, the role of the artist is to reflect the times, and the times have been dystopian and quite maddening. Staying sane in the midst of it all is difficult. It was necessary for me to recognize and move through that during the first part of the mix before being able to move into other - more soothing and soft - feelings and sounds later on.

Altogether, the mix contains a good portion of rage, love and longing. I tried to honour all those different feelings in this mix as the composition they form together, rather than isolate one of them.

What message does the music you play convey?

That discomfort, disorder and chaos are okay & part of the process ! And oftentimes, they are good for us and for the reimagination of our world. Most things aren't linear: feelings, worldbuilding, etc. The music I play and the way I play it isn't linear either - I guess that makes it human. :-)

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

It's eclectic, emotive, and honours the Black roots of electronic & popular music.

Who should release a new album/EP already?

Sampha !!! Pleaseee. I return to his music whenever I need a sonic embrace. Desperate for more. I'm also currently obsessed with the DJ Shoe remix of incomplete kisses I play in the mix.

What's magical about music?

That it makes you feel and also makes you move thru those feels ! Empire's focus on rationality and logic is murderous to the soul - music breaks right through that for me. Its power to make you feel more rooted is a magical thing.

What is your main source for finding new music?

Streaming services, Bandcamp, 🏴‍☠️ *Pirate noises* 🏴‍☠️, Discogs, my wonderful chosen family and their great taste in music !!! And dancefloors, always dancefloors..
