'Journey through the blend between Surinamese traditions and Black American music traditions'
In celebration of the vinyl release of a unique 80s recording by Surinamese keyboardist Sonny Khoeblal and the band Thalamus, Steppin’ Into Tomorrow provides a sonic journey through various Surinamese music traditions. After the country’s independence in 1975, experimentations with Black American genres flourished. After hearing Sonny Khoeblal’s recording on the Rush Hour compilation 'Surinam Funk Force', Steppin’ sought a collaboration with Sonny to showcase more from the archive. This led to the 7” vinyl release of Thalamus with two previously unreleased recordings, which will be released on Sept 25.
The evening will engage with Surinamese music as well as the country’s history, which is the backdrop of the sound that emerged. Paramaribop is an urban experiment with Bebop, local music traditions like Kawina were melded with Funk and Sonny Khoeblal himself experimented with Jazz Fusion. Listen through the history of a country that is a reflection of the world.
Steppin' Into Tomorrow stands with artists & labels and encourages listeners to support them by buying their music directly from Bandcamp. If you've enjoyed this article, please consider subscribing to our monthly newsletter to stay in the loop.
