Doka, Amsterdam

After a brief summer break, we are back at Doka to bring people together through various soulful sounds. For this special night we’ve invited Chicago's own Vick Lavender for his debut (!) DJ set in Amsterdam. Vick has been active in music for 30+ years and he's the founder of Sophisticado Recordings and co-owner of Bridgeport Record Store in Chicago. Lavender has dedicated his career to elevating deep and soulful house music. His unique sound has gained him international recognition. His mastery of these elements gives his music the ability to call the ancestral spirit and permeate the soul of its listener. Vick's music has been championed by industry heavyweights such as Joe Claussell, Louie Vega, and Ron Trent, so it's an honour to finally have him in Amsterdam!

Opening up the night is a mystique Dutch selector by the name of yM. Influenced by jazz, hip-hop, underground house, and broken beat, the multi-instrumentalist presents a rooted selection of hidden gems. yM, also known under different aliases, communicates his internal matters through sound, and his perspectives on life are audible in every musical gesture.

To top it all off, one of Rotterdam's finest soulful selectors, and familiar faces at Doka, is closing this night: Charmaine. Charmaine's DJ sets reflect her endless musical curiosity. They're guided by instinct rather than genre, that's how she moves freely through decades and styles. From deep 70s jazz-funk cuts to dubbed-out house or raw Detroit techno, she always lets the music breathe and stories unfold naturally. Each set is a conversation between her, the space and the crowd at cult places like De School, North Sea Jazz Festival, Dekmantel Selectors or Gilles Peterson's Worldwide. She joins the dots between diverse scenes and sounds, always favouring what feels timeless.

Steppin' Into Tomorrow stands with artists & labels and encourages listeners to support them by buying their music directly from Bandcamp. If you've enjoyed this article, please consider subscribing to our monthly newsletter to stay in the loop.
