Mixed Feelings | Hervé

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: A smooth selection of house-oriented tracks by Hervé, suitable for the hot summer days.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

I wanted to share some soulful, dreamy, and cosmic feelings with this set of tracks. I had been thinking about this podcast for some time but did not prepare a set selection for it, but a sonic direction. It is pure flow and float, carried by some of my favorite records.

What message does the music you play convey?

I constantly listen to music - of all sorts - and there is rarely a moment of silence around me. Kid Cudi described it best in his song 'Soundtrack 2 My Life'. I believe there is a song, a track for each moment and when I select, I try to take the audience or listener to this moment of connection, where there is understanding, relation. This opens the door to building trust to explore together, maybe some sounds or rhythms that are new, and open the mind. That is always my approach, unbounded by genres, as I believe that music has this universality which is its beauty.

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

Deep house has and will always have a special place for me. The arrangements, the progression, the soulfulness, the organic instruments, the vocals, and a great deal of storytelling. This mix captures sounds that will forever remain at the core of my tastes in electronic dance music.

Who should release a new album/EP already?

I closed this mix with a track from Frank Ocean, and I think I am not the only one waiting for some new music from him!

What's magical about music?

We can very rationally break down how music is created and conveyed. However, it remains one of the most irrational sources of pleasure, happiness, and openness. Isn't this magical?

What is your main source for finding new music?

Bandcamp, Discogs, and of course record stores.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

Very cliche maybe, but sunset driving on the Californian highway 101. I am thankful that I was able to travel there almost 10 years ago, and the sounds revived some beautiful memories.

Thank you to the Steppin' crew for the opportunity and for all you are doing for the culture. It changes lives.
