Mixed Feelings | Pelanoir

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: An emotive peek into the catalog of Pelanoir, resembling a walk through life full of its highs and lows.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

I took the term 'mixed feelings' quite literally, haha. The selection of these songs came from a vulnerable place. I tried to capture the emotions that I can experience on bad days, good days, terrible days, and the following healing days. I blended these feelings together, or I clashed them as a contrast within the mix. Some of these songs are very dear to me. Listening to these songs has been so healing, they helped me express how I feel in a way that words can't. But some words can, there are some songs with spoken words involved that describe feelings and some of the song titles also reflect these emotions. Up and down and up and down and up; that's life, I guess, but what do I know - I'm still young haha.

What message does the music you play convey?

The message of this mix came while creating it because I didn't complete it in one go. I restarted the process many times hahaha (thank you for your patience Steppin' Crew). Eventually, I realised why that kept happening. It was the first time I made a pre-made mix and each time I revisited it, I wanted to approach things differently, influenced by how I felt that day and the music that resonated with me. It led me to the conclusion that I wanted to create a journey reflecting the experience of having both bad and good days.

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

It is a big mirror of my music taste in the jazz spectrum. A lot of contemporary jazz, broken beats, a bit of deep house and some bird sounds.

Who should release a new album/EP already?

Ooff, it's tough to pick just one artist, there are so many whose work I absolutely love (and to be honest, I've found it hard to stay up to date with all these releases happening at the moment and then also dig through history haha). But, if I had to choose from the artists featured in this curated mix, I'd be overjoyed if Nala Sinephro released another album similar to Space 1.8. I listen to it every week :) New music from Jordan Rakei's alter-ego Dan Kye is also very welcome...

What's magical about music?

The peace of mind, the connections it can create and the feelings, like I said above, you can not describe in words but can resonate within the music. + Music brings me in a hyperfocus if I'm playing, listening, digging, DJing... it is indeed magic.

What is your main source for finding new music?

Streaming services, Bandcamp, Discogs, Shazam (sorrynotsorry), family & friends, other DJs I look up to (including all the Steppin' fam DJs), going to concerts or clubs.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

I've got an entire movie visualized in my mind. If they invent a projector in the future, that can connect directly to your brain, we can stream it at the Steppin' Into Tomorrow Melkweg events.

Thanks to the Steppin fam for having my back since day one and of course for the invite for this lovely mixed feeling mix serie :)

Feel free to listen to the mix however you like, but I'd recommend at home or during a long train ride with headphones for the best experience.

Enjoy! <3
