PREMIERE: Re:Fill - 'Impulse'

Rising Italian drummer/keyboardist duo fuses 70s jazz-funk, broken beats, and hip-hop grooves on their debut album Cycles. Right before the album sees the light of day, we're here to lead you into it with the opening track 'Impulse'.

Re:Fill is a rising jazz-funk project from Rome, Italy consisting of Gaetano DeCarli on drums and Stefano De Santis on keys. They first arrived together on the scene around 2020 with their debut The Vinyl Session, which consisted of two tracks: 'Swaggy Red Fish' and 'Fonk'. Then several singles dropped that all exhibited slightly different feels and grooves, but the cutting edge sound of today's jazz-funk is present in them all.

The drummer/keyboardist combination seems to be a popular one in recent years. Everywhere there are these hot duos popping up with a contemporary jazz sound that aims at the dance floors. Some examples are Yussef Kamaal (before they split up into Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams), the future-jazz prodigies DOMi & JD Beck, Belgians Lander & Adriaan, and our very own Dutchmen Niels Broos & Jamie Peet. It must be about a certain type of freedom and connection to combine these elements that make it work really well in club-like settings. Re:Fill are no exception and fit into the same framework and setting.

On the album, there are 5 original songs by the duo, and 3 remixes by some of the UK's current heavy hitters, such as Ben Hauke and WheelUP. Plus fellow-Italian producer SofaTalk delivered a stunning flip as well. We've chosen the opening track 'Impulse' today and it resonates deeply with our beloved 1970s-inspired music from the likes of the Brazilian legends Azymuth. The song is in 7/8 time signature which gives it that off-edge, especially after I listened to the remixes because those have changed the time signature into a regular 4/4. I can appreciate those little things, it's all about the subtle details for me.

Rhythm ever-present, melody rising and captivating, thirsting for the chance to wrap the listener around its finger, a tantalizing and ever entrancing meander through the possibility of complex percussion and heartwarming keys.

No more talk, time to listen and absorb these frequencies!

The album Cycles will be out via Cognitiva Records on June 3rd. Pre-order it here.
